Adventure - The Need
We are meant to live out of our comfort zone.
I am drawn to adventure. I have been drawn to many adventures but just could not figure out how to make them happen. What if you could try everything on your bucket list and still do your work? I am already a remote worker who can work from anywhere as long as I have a good internet connection.
I travelled to Seoul, South Korea, and Thailand without people realizing I was away. The time difference was a challenge and delayed my response. Luckily, I did not have any meetings at the time.
What sort of adventure takes you out of your comfort zone? I am now rethinking Vanlife as it allows you to venture out of your comfort zone and travel all around in a van. In my case, this is North America.
I was first drawn to this sort of adventure when I had a pickup truck. I was drawn to Overlanding, an activity where you mount a popup tent on your vehicle and travel around remote locations to stay. It is similar to van life, but you are unable to just stop on the side of a city street and spend the night.
I loved the freedom of setting up in the woods and being self-sufficient. Everything we needed was on the truck and accessible. We could sit outside by the campfire, make our own meals and relax in nature. It is a fantastic feeling. However, in Ontario, Canada, you can go to limited places with this sort of setup. You can’t set up on a city street or at a Walmart. Which is why vanlife appeals to me. Living out of a van allows you to find any spot, whether it be in a parking lot or a campground. You pull over (ensuring you are in a “parking overnight permitted” area) cover your windows and you are set.
There is an organization near me that has rental “Van Life” vans called Campr . They also sell these vans and offer a custom-built service. I will meet with them today to discuss what I want to build. There is a guy I follow out there named Trent the Traveller. He is an online van lifer gamer. He travels to North America in a van and plays games while travelling. His van build appeals to me because he has encompassed a workstation. This appeals to me because it would allow me to work and travel.
I have been meaning to start a YouTube channel for some time to tell my story of my awakening and my spiritual journey as I navigate life and the path as it has been presented. I believe this might be part of it.
In 2022, we packed up our five-bedroom house and moved into a two-bedroom apartment. This was a huge stretch out of our comfort zone as it forced us to eliminate the clutter surrounding us. Over the years, how much stuff we have accumulated has been shocking! We hired a company called Maxsold, and what they do is come in, photograph everything and put items in lots to sell in an online auction. So they will pack up your junk drawer and auction it off. It is an amazing service. The only thing that is difficult is that all auctions start at $1 dollar. So, your expensive dining suite starts the bidding at only a dollar. However, you can know in your heart that items don’t end up in landfill. I highly recommend their service.
After the auction is complete, the bidders come and pick up their lots. You don’t even need to be present Maxsold staff controls the whole thing. Here is a timelapse of the pick up day.
I have to say that it is a liberating experience to give up all the stuff we have accumulated. I think as our children move out, we think we need to keep things for them, however this is rarely the case. Our kids didn’t want any of our stuff, and when people pass away its incredible to see how many dumpsters are ordered in order to empty their homes. We decided to empty our place ourselves.
As I have gotten older I feel like I want more experiences rather than stuff. I am always willing to give up stuff. In our new apartment half of the walls are floor to ceiling windows so we get to witness the world around us 24/7. We see all the sun sets and rises, we see all the storms as they approach. Its quite a new thing for us to witness.
So on to the next adventure. I will keep you posted on my progress.
